sila rossa

location: Calabria, Italy

type: carpentry, straw construction & plastering workshop

date: July 2025

key materials: timber, straw, lime & clay

The prototype is located in Calabria, a region where the contemporary construction industry largely depends on imported prefabricated concrete elements. In contrast, this project explores the potential of local resources, aiming to activate a circular approach to building through materials sourced from the surrounding territory. Among these, the primary resources are agricultural by-products and timber sourced from the Sila Mountains.

The structure is conceived as a demountable wooden system assembled from chestnut and fir wood, cut and naturally dried in the local forest. Its foundations are composed of chestnut beams laid within a bed of recycled stone and construction debris. The walls are infilled with straw bales recovered as waste from a local mill and plastered with clay and lime.

Through these material choices, the project tests a model of construction rooted in the bioregion, one that reclaims waste, revalues traditional resources, and opens new perspectives on sustainable building practices in Calabria.
