keniko

location: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

type: graphic novel

date: 2020

Keniko delves into the historical layers of Talian sefer, one of the capital’s oldest districts, threatened to disappear due to the city’s rapid urbanization. The immense pressure of fast-paced development translates into a violent replacement of the current housing stock through eviction and demolition. A controversial process that opened up a debate and left me with a question: how can we densify and reconfigure delipidated historical districts without erasing their traces, interpret their styles of life while providing a dynamic structure that can cater for their inhabitants’ dreams? Her story spans generations, capturing the formation of the neighborhood, the Italian occupation, the organic growth of the informal settlement, the looming threat of demolition, and the alternative redevelopment.
