This former stable, built in the traditional regional timber-frame style, is located in heart of the Swiss Alps in the Goms valley in Valais, known for its striking alpine landscape and a rich tradition of wooden construction. The entire village of Reckingen is part of the Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites to preserve its unique architectural character. The intention of the clients was to create a holiday house integrated carefully into the existing log structure. The design follows the original room layout and this way avoids demolishing existing walls. A few new partition walls were added on the ground floor to create an entrance hall, three bedrooms and two bathrooms. Private areas are reduced to a minimum, while the common living room on the upper floor is designed to be as spacious as possible. On the ground floor, the rooms are lit by strip windows cut into the length of the beams. Upstairs, the openings, which are larger than those in the stable, hide the window frames from the outside, while inside they offer a glimpse of the stable old beams.
